Is AC mold urgent to clean for coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be our bedroom AC unit. I just pulled the filter out and the entire plastic housing behind it is covered in thick black spots and a fuzzy grey film. This has probably been building up since the last summer season. How urgent is it to get this cleaned, and should we avoid using that room until it's fixed?

Yes, this is urgent. With visible black and grey microbial growth in the AC unit and your children coughing, you should stop using that AC immediately and have the room professionally inspected and cleaned.
The combination of Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive in the condensate drain pan and cooling coils behind the filter. The air blowing through that contaminated unit is aerosolizing spores and fragments directly into the bedroom, which is very likely the cause of the respiratory irritation. For children, whose airways are smaller, this exposure can significantly worsen coughing and allergies. Avoid using the room until the system is cleaned. Keep the door closed to contain any spores that have settled. Simply replacing the filter will not solve the problem, as the contamination is deep within the unit. This requires a professional remediation that includes applying specialized, non-toxic biocides to the internal housing and coils, followed by a high-pressure extraction to remove the debris. For a case this visible, a post-cleaning surface sample sent to a microbiology lab can verify the environment is safe before the room is used again. |
