Is AC vent mold a DIY fix or professional issue?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the edges of the AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. The room has felt really humid lately, even with the AC on. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray or is this a sign of a bigger problem with the AC unit that needs a professional?

Black spot mould around AC vents is common in Dubai's humid climate and often indicates condensation issues. A surface-level DIY approach can work for minor, isolated cases. For a few small spots, wiping with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the AC is off during cleaning.
However, visible vent mould is frequently a symptom of a larger problem within the AC unit itself, like a clogged condensate drain line or a dirty cooling coil. If the room feels persistently humid despite the AC running, it strongly suggests the system isn't dehumidifying properly, allowing mould to thrive inside the ductwork or unit. In this case, a surface clean is a temporary fix. For a villa in Jumeirah with a two-year occupancy, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They can assess the entire system—the drain pan, evaporator coils, and internal ducts—for contamination you cannot see. Improper cleaning can disturb mould and spread spores throughout your home. A science-driven approach with proper containment and HEPA vacuuming is needed for systemic issues. The professional's goal is to fix the moisture source and remediate the mould, not just clean the visible signs. |
