Is AC vent mold causing my morning sickness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our Jumeirah villa's master bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I can see black, fuzzy spots spreading on the wall around it. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat that goes away after I leave for work. Is this black mold, and could it be the reason I’ve been feeling so unwell every morning?

The black, fuzzy growth around your AC vent is very likely mold, and it's almost certainly causing your morning symptoms. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold when condensation occurs, like from a leaking unit. The spores released can cause exactly what you're experiencing: nighttime exposure leading to congestion, sore throat, and a stuffy head upon waking.

In villas, this often starts with a clogged condensate drain line, a common issue here. The moisture then leaks into your wall, feeding mold growth on the organic material in the drywall. You should have a professional inspection to identify the mold type and the source of the moisture. Proper remediation involves fixing the leak, removing the contaminated porous materials like the affected drywall, and cleaning the ductwork, not just wiping the visible surface.

For your health, it's important to address this promptly. Continue airing out the room and consider using a dehumidifier, but the leak must be stopped. Look for a provider that uses lab analysis to confirm the species and can show you documented proof that the contamination has been properly removed.
