Is AC wall mold dangerous or can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind it in our bedroom, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading there. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks with all the humidity. I’m worried about my family breathing this in, but I’m not sure if this is something I can just clean with bleach myself or if I absolutely need to call a professional pest control company here in Dubai.

Black wall mold from an AC leak is a health concern, especially in Dubai's humid climate where it can spread quickly. While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), any mold growth indicates a moisture problem and can cause irritation—congestion, coughing, or worsened allergies—particularly for children or those with asthma.
You cannot effectively clean this yourself with bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it does not kill the mold's root structure (hyphae) penetrating the porous wall material. More critically, you must fix the source of the moisture. In Dubai, this is typically a clogged AC drain line or insufficient insulation causing condensation. Simply wiping the wall will result in the mold returning within days or weeks. For a small, new patch (under a square foot), you can contain it by scrubbing with a dedicated mold remover (not bleach), wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the water leak and spread you describe, professional assessment is strongly advised. They will identify and rectify the AC fault to prevent recurrence. The only way to know the actual risk level is through lab testing, which identifies the species. A reputable inspector will provide documented before-and-after results to verify the cleanup's effectiveness, not just wipe it away. |
