Is AC wall mold urgent or can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for the past two weeks, and now I'm seeing small black spots forming on the wall behind the curtain. It’s been so humid lately in JLT and I'm worried it's spreading. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

That small leak has likely created the perfect environment for mold growth in our humid climate. The black spots are a sign of active growth, and it needs to be addressed immediately to prevent it from spreading inside the wall cavity.

For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), you can attempt cleaning with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated supermarket mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the leak is ongoing, this is a temporary fix. The source of the moisture—the AC leak—must be repaired by an HVAC technician first. Otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

In JLT's high humidity, mold can colonize behind walls long before it becomes visible. If the area is larger than a square foot, the leak has been persistent, or you notice a musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the full extent of the damage hidden from view, which is common in these cases. Proper remediation for established growth involves containment and HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleaning.
