Is AED 1,500 a fair price for bathroom mold removal?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment has been turning black for a couple of months now. We run the exhaust fan but the humidity from our daily showers just doesn't seem to go away, and I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls. I got a quote from one company for AED 1,500 for a full treatment, but I have no idea if that's a fair price or if I should just try to tackle it myself with a bleach spray.
Is AED 1,500 a reasonable price for professional mold remediation in a standard-sized bathroom, and is this a job I should absolutely not DIY?

For a standard bathroom in Dubai, that price is within the expected range for professional remediation, assuming it includes a full diagnostic and treatment protocol. The cost is driven by the need to identify the moisture source, remove the contaminated grout, and apply specialized biocides to prevent regrowth, not just clean the surface.
Given the persistent humidity and your concern about spread behind the walls, a DIY bleach spray is strongly discouraged. It only bleaches the visible mould, leaving the root colony intact, and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces. The high humidity in Dubai, especially with year-round AC use creating constant condensation, guarantees it will return quickly. The critical first step is a professional inspection to determine the extent. If moisture has penetrated the wall cavity, the problem is more serious than surface discoloration. Reputable companies use moisture meters and borescopes to assess this hidden damage, which a DIY approach cannot address. A proper remediation should include the removal of affected porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobials, followed by a post-remediation verification test to confirm the space is clean. For a definitive assessment, request an on-site evaluation from a provider with a certified mould inspector. They can determine if the issue is confined to the grout or if there is a more significant moisture problem within the wall that needs to be resolved first. |
