Is AED 2,500 reasonable for small black mold removal?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a small AC leak we didn't catch. It's gotten worse over the last month and I'm worried about my family's health. I got a quote for AED 2,500 from one company, but is that a reasonable price for a small job like this, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from Ace Hardware?

That quote is high for a small, isolated patch. In Dubai, mold remediation costs depend heavily on the extent of the problem, not just the visible spot. The primary concern is that the visible mold is often just the surface manifestation; the underlying moisture source and potential growth inside the wall cavity need assessment.

Given the cause was an AC leak, the moisture may have seeped into the drywall or insulation behind it. A professional inspection is crucial to determine the full scope. They should use a moisture meter to check the surrounding walls. If the structure is dry and the contamination is truly superficial, the job is smaller.

For a small, surface-level patch, remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and ensuring the moisture source is fixed. However, if the drywall is saturated, it requires removal and replacement, which increases cost and labor. The high humidity here means any remaining moisture will cause rapid regrowth.

Before proceeding, get at least two more assessments. Any reputable company should provide a detailed scope of work explaining why that cost is justified. For a truly minor case, you might handle it yourself with proper PPE, a HEPA filter, and a dedicated mold cleaner—but only if you are certain the leak is completely repaired and the wall is dry. Given the health risks and Dubai's climate, a professional assessment is the safest first step to verify the extent.
