Is air conditioning causing respiratory issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been on non-stop since the heat wave hit a couple of weeks ago. Every night, when I try to sleep, I wake up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. My kids have also started complaining about having coughs and runny noses. Could this be due to the air conditioning? Is there something I should check or do to make it healthier for us?

Air conditioning can indeed play a role in respiratory issues. In the context of Dubai and the UAE, where heat waves are common, it's not uncommon for folks to experience discomfort like stuffy noses and sore throats while using air conditioners non-stop. These symptoms could be related to several factors, including poor indoor air quality (IAQ), humidity levels, or even the AC system itself.

In Dubai, regulations regarding HVAC systems are stringent as they aim to ensure a healthy environment for residents. However, it's not uncommon for issues to arise if the system is improperly maintained or if there's a lack of regular inspections. The UAE generally adheres to standards set by organizations like ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) in terms of indoor air quality.

Given your situation, it’s crucial to consider several factors:

1. Humidity Levels: High humidity levels can exacerbate respiratory issues. Ensure that the relative humidity level is kept between 30% - 60%. This range is generally recommended for optimal comfort and reduced risk of mold growth in air conditioning systems.

2. Filter Maintenance: Check if your AC filters are clean and replace them regularly. Dirty filters can harbor dust, allergens, and even microorganisms that might trigger respiratory problems. In Dubai’s hot and dusty climate, it's advisable to change the filters every 1-3 months or more frequently depending on usage.

3. Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in your bedroom. Sometimes, running the AC without adequate fresh air exchange can lead to a buildup of indoor pollutants. Consider opening windows for short intervals if possible, especially during cooler times of day when outdoor temperatures are lower.

4. Mold and Mildew: With frequent use of ACs, there's always a risk of moisture accumulation leading to mold growth. Mold spores in the air can cause respiratory issues like coughing, runny nose, and sore throat. A professional inspection for mold is recommended if you suspect any presence.

5. Air Quality Sensors: If possible, invest in an air quality sensor to monitor particulate matter (PM2.5) levels and other pollutants in your home. This can provide valuable insights into the health of your indoor environment.

6. Professional Inspection: Given that multiple family members are experiencing similar symptoms, it might be wise to consult with a professional environmental inspection and remediation company such as Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough evaluation. They can provide guidance on necessary repairs or maintenance that your AC system may need.

In summary, while air conditioning is essential in hot climates like Dubai’s, proper maintenance and regular checks are crucial to prevent respiratory issues. Ensure you're addressing humidity levels, maintaining clean filters, and possibly seeking professional help if symptoms persist.
