Is apartment mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa in our Deira apartment to look behind it and found a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall, probably from a slow AC leak. It smells damp and earthy back there. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and should I be worried about their long-term health?

Yes, the mold behind your sofa is very likely causing your children's persistent cough and cold-like symptoms. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, this is a common issue. The damp, earthy smell confirms active microbial growth. Mold spores become airborne and irritate the respiratory tract, leading to coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, particularly in children.

You should be concerned for their immediate health and take action to prevent long-term issues. Prolonged exposure can lead to the development of asthma or more severe allergic reactions. The first step is to stop the moisture source—have an AC technician inspect and repair that leak immediately, as it is feeding the mold.

For a patch of that size and given the health symptoms, professional mold remediation is strongly advised. DIY cleaning often disperses spores throughout the apartment. A reputable company will contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. They can also identify if the mold has spread into the wall cavity, which is common.

Following remediation, request a post-clearance test to verify the spore count in your indoor air has returned to a safe level. This provides documented proof the problem is resolved. Improving ventilation in that area and using a dehumidifier can help prevent recurrence.
