Is bathroom black mold causing my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the last couple of weeks, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our master bathroom shower in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and found a ton of black mold growing underneath it. The bathroom doesn’t have a window and the smell is really musty. Is this black mold dangerous and could it be causing their respiratory issues?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold discovered in your bathroom is contributing to your children's persistent coughing. The black growth underneath the silicone sealant is a classic sign of chronic moisture intrusion, a common issue in Dubai bathrooms, especially those without windows. The musty odor you detect is a clear indicator of active microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC) release, which, along with mold spores, is a known respiratory irritant.

The humid climate of the UAE, combined with year-round air conditioning that creates significant temperature differentials, leads to intense condensation within wall cavities and behind finishes. This provides the perfect environment for mold proliferation. While the term "black mold" is often associated with Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, other common molds like Aspergillus and Cladosporium can also cause significant allergic reactions and respiratory distress, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

Simply cleaning the visible surface is insufficient. The mold growth underneath the sealant suggests a deeper contamination within the wall substrate. Disturbing it without proper containment protocols can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins throughout your apartment, exacerbating the health issues.

For a definitive identification of the mold species and assessment of the airborne spore count, a professional inspection is critical. We use techniques like moisture mapping and thermal imaging to locate the full extent of the problem. Remediation must follow strict guidelines to ensure the health and safety of your family.
