Is bathroom black mold dangerous for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s been growing in the corners of our master bathroom in JVC. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading on the ceiling above the shower. It’s gotten worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago.
Is this a serious health hazard I need to get fixed immediately, or can it wait until next month?

Yes, the black mold in your bathroom is a serious health hazard, especially for children, and it should be addressed immediately. The coughing your kids are experiencing is a common symptom of mold exposure, which can irritate the respiratory system, trigger asthma attacks, and cause allergic reactions. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing lungs and immune systems.
The conditions you describe in your JVC home are a textbook case for mold proliferation. The Dubai climate, with its extreme humidity, creates immense condensation, especially in bathrooms where hot showers are used. This moisture, combined with year-round AC use which can cause temperature differentials and hidden condensation points, provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive on organic materials like drywall and grout. What you see on the ceiling is likely the fruiting body of a larger colony that may be growing within the ceiling void or behind the tiles. Simply wiping it away is insufficient and can aerosolize the spores, worsening the air quality. This requires professional assessment and remediation. We strongly recommend you do not wait. Contact a certified mold inspector to conduct air quality and surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination. Based on Dubai Municipality's public health regulations, persistent dampness and mold growth that affects occupant health is considered a violation of housing standards.
