Is bathroom black mold dangerous for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's suddenly appeared in the corners of our bathroom ceiling. We've lived here in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for 2 years and just noticed this over the last week, probably from all the humidity after the recent showers. It's spreading along the grout and even onto the ceiling paint. What's the most effective and safe way to remove this mold for good, and should I get my landlord involved for this?

Yes, bathroom black mold is a significant health concern and is very likely contributing to your children's coughing. As a certified mold inspector in Dubai, I can confirm that the species commonly referred to as "black mold" (often Stachybotrys chartarum) produces mycotoxins and spores that are potent irritants to the respiratory system. Children, with their developing lungs and immune systems, are particularly susceptible. Symptoms like coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and allergic reactions are common.

The recent showers have dramatically increased the ambient humidity, which is the primary catalyst for this sudden outbreak. In Dubai's climate, where we combat high humidity year-round with constant air conditioning, bathrooms become prime locations for condensation. This moisture, trapped on cold surfaces like ceiling corners and grout, provides the perfect environment for mold to proliferate. Simply wiping it away is a temporary fix; the underlying moisture problem must be addressed.

For a case like yours, where the mold is spreading on porous materials like ceiling paint and grout, and given the associated health symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and can aerosolize the spores, worsening the air quality. A professional assessment will identify the exact species and the full extent of the growth, often hidden within the ceiling void.

Regarding your landlord, under Dubai rental law, the responsibility for structural maintenance, which includes addressing the root cause of moisture intrusion (e.g., faulty ventilation, leaks, or insulation), typically falls on them. You should notify them immediately.
