Is bathroom black mold making my kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold spots that have started growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I just noticed it getting worse over the last couple of weeks, especially after every shower. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket?

The presence of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger) in your bathroom is a significant health concern and a probable cause of your children's respiratory irritation, such as coughing. The warm, humid climate of Dubai, combined with condensation from hot showers and potential inadequate ventilation in older Jumeirah buildings, creates a perfect microenvironment for rapid mold proliferation. Air conditioning systems can also inadvertently spread mold spores from the bathroom throughout the living space.

While supermarket bleach solutions may appear to remove the visible discoloration, they are ineffective and often counterproductive. Bleach is primarily water, which can feed the mold roots (hyphae) deep within porous grout and drywall. It also fails to address the root cause—excess moisture—and does not kill the spores, allowing for rapid regrowth. More critically, the act of scrubbing can aerosolize a high concentration of toxic spores, drastically increasing airborne exposure and exacerbating respiratory symptoms.

This situation warrants a professional inspection. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards, emphasize the importance of addressing indoor air quality hazards. A certified specialist will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the colonization and the source of the moisture intrusion.
