Is bathroom black mold removal costly and DIY-safe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold that’s been spreading across the ceiling in our master bathroom in Jumeirah. It’s gotten way worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I’m worried about the health risks and if it’s gotten into the AC vents. For a standard bathroom here, what’s the average cost for professional mold remediation, and is it something I should absolutely hire out for or can I tackle it myself?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers combined with year-round AC use. The cost for professional remediation depends heavily on the extent of the growth, particularly if it has penetrated the ceiling board or insulation.

For a small, contained area on a surface like grout, a thorough DIY approach can be effective. However, for a spreading patch on the ceiling, especially with health symptoms present, professional assessment is strongly advised. The risk is that the mold has colonized the back of the ceiling board or the AC void above, which you cannot see. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize spores and spread them, including into your AC system, potentially worsening the cough you've observed.

A proper remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials. In the UAE, reputable companies follow standards like IICRC S520 for professional mold remediation. The final cost is determined by the square footage affected and the labor required for containment and removal. You should request an on-site inspection for an accurate assessment. For health concerns, a lab test can also identify the mold species to better understand the potential risk.
