Is bathroom black mold urgent or DIY fixable?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles near the shower. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse quickly. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a trip to ACE Hardware?

Black mold in a bathroom grout is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers and year-round AC use. The urgency depends on the extent. A small, surface-level patch confined to a few tiles is often a maintenance issue you can address yourself. A widespread spread, especially if it's also on drywall, behind fixtures, or has a persistent musty odor, indicates a deeper moisture problem and requires professional assessment.

For a small DIY fix, use a dedicated grout mold cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub thoroughly, then rinse and dry the area completely. The key is not just cleaning but moisture control. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and glass. A dehumidifier can help significantly.

If the mold reappears within a week or covers a large area, the moisture is likely coming from behind the tiles, perhaps from a cracked grout line or a leaking pipe. This is not DIY. In such cases, a professional inspection identifies the hidden moisture source to prevent structural damage and recurring mold, which standard cleaning cannot fix. They can also perform air or surface testing to confirm the mold type if there are health concerns.
