Is bathroom black mold urgent to treat with kids coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been slowly spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and I feel like the humidity has made it so much worse over the last couple of months. How urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can treat myself this weekend?

Yes, you should treat this as urgent. The combination of visible black mold and your children's coughing symptoms means the situation requires immediate attention.

In Dubai's high humidity, bathroom mold is common, but the presence of symptoms elevates the risk. The mold is releasing spores into the air, which can irritate the respiratory tract, causing or exacerbating coughing, especially in children. While not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, many common species found in damp bathrooms can cause these health effects.

For a small, surface-level patch on non-porous tile, a thorough DIY cleaning with a dedicated mold remover or a diluted vinegar solution can be effective. However, if the mold has spread significantly along the grout (which is porous), has a musty odor, or is recurring after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Professionals can determine if the moisture source is a leak or just condensation and assess if the mold has penetrated behind tiles.

Given your villa's construction and the Jumeirah climate, the underlying cause is likely persistent humidity. Simply cleaning the surface won't stop it from returning. A proper remediation addresses the moisture source—often through improved ventilation, repairing leaks, or installing a dehumidifier—and safely removes the contaminated material. For your children's health, it's best to get a professional assessment to understand the extent of the issue and ensure it is resolved completely.
