Is bathroom grout mold urgent or DIY cleanable?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years, but just this week I noticed these black spots starting to creep along the grout between the tiles behind our toilet. The bathroom has no window and the exhaust fan is pretty weak, so it always feels a bit damp. Given how humid it's been lately, is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner this weekend?

Black spots on bathroom grout are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and lack of ventilation in many apartments. This is likely surface mold, which you can often address yourself if the area is small and you act quickly.

For a small patch, start by scrubbing the grout with a stiff brush and a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and water. White vinegar can also be effective. The key is to dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning; use a squeegee on tiles and a fan to circulate air, as moisture is the root cause. If the mold returns quickly or the staining is extensive and has penetrated deep into the grout, the underlying material may be compromised. In such cases, professional assessment is recommended to determine if regrouting or more extensive remediation is needed to solve the moisture issue permanently.

Given your bathroom's weak exhaust fan, improving ventilation is critical for long-term prevention. Run the fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. For windowless bathrooms, a small dehumidifier can measurably reduce ambient moisture levels.
