Is bathroom mold a serious health risk needing immediate fix?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bathroom in the Marina apartment has had this damp, musty smell for the last couple of months that I just can't get rid of. I've noticed a few small black spots starting to appear in the grout between the tiles near the shower, and it's getting worse after every use. My main concern is whether this is a serious health risk that I need to get fixed immediately by building management, or if it's something I can handle myself with a good cleaning over the weekend?

Bathroom mould is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers meeting cold AC surfaces. The health risk depends on the individual and the mould species. For most, it causes irritation like sneezing, congestion, or worsened allergies. Risk is higher for infants, the elderly, or those with asthma or compromised immune systems.

The small black spots in your grout are likely surface mould. In many Marina apartments, poor bathroom ventilation exacerbates the problem, allowing dampness to persist. You can attempt to clean it yourself with a dedicated grout cleaner or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterward.

However, the persistent musty smell you describe suggests the moisture issue may be deeper, potentially within the wall or under the tiles. If the mould returns quickly after cleaning or the smell remains, it indicates an ongoing moisture problem that DIY cleaning won't solve. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the source of the dampness—whether it's a hidden leak, insufficient sealing, or inadequate ventilation.

For serious, recurring cases, involving building management may be necessary if the issue is structural. Professional remediation, including moisture mapping and air quality testing from a company with a microbiology lab, is the only way to confirm the mould type and ensure it's properly resolved. Focus on fixing the moisture source first; simply cleaning the visible mould is a temporary solution.
