Is bathroom mold causing my cough and congestion?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It’s been worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. Lately, I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a dry cough that goes away once I leave the apartment. Is it possible this mold is causing my symptoms, and what’s the most effective way to get rid of it for good in this climate?

Based on your description of the symptoms resolving when you leave the apartment, it is highly probable that the mold growth in your bathroom is contributing to your persistent cough and nasal congestion. The black spots along the grout are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common in Dubai's humid environment and known respiratory irritants. The recent increase in humidity has created an ideal breeding ground for these spores, which become aerosolized during showers and are then inhaled.

In the UAE climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create constant condensation cycles, DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix. The mold's root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into porous grout and behind tiles, making surface-level removal ineffective. For a permanent solution, professional remediation is strongly advised.

The most effective protocol involves a three-step process: First, a certified inspection to identify the species and moisture source. Second, containment and removal of contaminated materials using HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. Finally, application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents and sealing of surfaces to inhibit regrowth. This is crucial in Dubai, as simply bleaching the surface will not address the underlying moisture problem or remove the allergenic particles.
