Is bathroom mold causing my husband's cough?« Back to Previous Page

Our family bathroom in our older Deira apartment has had black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles for a few months. Since the weather got really humid, my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. The exhaust fan is weak and the moisture just sits in there after every shower. Is this type of mold dangerous, and what's the most effective way to get rid of it for good?

Based on the description of black speckles in the grout and the persistent respiratory symptoms, it is highly probable that the mold in your bathroom is a contributing factor to your husband's cough and stuffy nose. In Dubai's high humidity climate, especially during summer, bathrooms without adequate ventilation become prime environments for mold growth, primarily due to condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials.

The black speckles are likely Aspergillus or Cladosporium, common household molds that can produce allergens and irritants. Continuous inhalation of these spores in a confined space like a bathroom can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues, particularly in individuals with sensitivities or compromised immune systems.

A weak exhaust fan that fails to evacuate moisture is the core of the problem. The most effective remediation is a two-step process. First, the existing mold must be professionally removed. DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended as it often only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots embedded deep in the porous grout, and it can pose respiratory hazards during application. For a permanent solution, the underlying moisture issue must be resolved by repairing or upgrading the exhaust fan to meet Dubai's building standards for adequate air exchange.

Given the health symptoms and the persistent nature of the problem, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold species and concentration levels, providing a scientifically-grounded remediation protocol.
