Is bathroom mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I finally noticed these black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the bathroom doesn't have a window, so it always feels a bit damp no matter how much I run the exhaust fan. Is this kind of mold exposure what’s causing their coughs, and how do I handle it safely?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth in your bathroom is contributing to your children's persistent cough. The black spots in the grout are a classic indicator of active mold colonization, likely from species such as Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (black mold). These fungi release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which, when inhaled, are known respiratory irritants and can cause symptoms exactly like the coughing you've described.

The environment you've described is a textbook case for mold proliferation common in Dubai villas. A windowless bathroom, despite an exhaust fan, often retains high humidity from showers. When combined with the constant cooling from your AC system, this creates significant condensation on cooler surfaces like tiles and grout. The Dubai climate, with its high ambient humidity for much of the year, exacerbates this issue, providing the perpetual moisture mold needs to thrive.

For a situation involving health symptoms, a DIY approach is not advisable. Disturbing the mold during cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's exposure. The safe and effective protocol involves professional assessment and remediation.

I strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our specialists at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and air sampling to determine the spore count and species present inside the bathroom and the adjacent rooms. This evidence-based approach is crucial for implementing the correct remediation strategy, which involves containment of the area, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing, and antimicrobial application to not only remove the visible growth but also address the root cause.
