Is bathroom mold causing my kids' cough and sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold in our bathroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed this black stuff growing in the grout between the tiles behind the toilet. It's been extra humid lately and the smell is really musty. Could this be causing their ongoing sore throats and should I be really worried?

Yes, bathroom mold can absolutely cause your kids' cough and sore throat. The black substance in your grout is likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, common in Dubai's humid climate. These molds release spores and mycotoxins that irritate the respiratory tract, leading to the exact symptoms you describe—especially in children, who are more susceptible.

The persistent humidity we're experiencing creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in bathrooms with inadequate ventilation. The musty smell confirms active microbial growth, meaning spores are circulating in the air your family breathes.

First, improve ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and leave the door open to reduce moisture buildup. Wipe down wet surfaces and fix any leaking pipes immediately. For visible mold on grout, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner can be used for small areas, but wear a mask and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

However, because the mold is behind the toilet and the musty odor is strong, this suggests a more established problem, possibly within the wall cavity if there's a hidden leak. Surface cleaning may not address the root cause or the full extent of the contamination.

For health concerns with children involved, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden dampness and perform air or surface sampling to identify the exact mold species. This is crucial for determining the right remediation strategy, as improper handling can disperse more spores. In Dubai, reputable providers should be able to explain their process and provide verifiable, lab-based results from the sampling.
