Is bathroom mold causing my toddler's persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom has been getting these dark, almost black, splotchy patches over the last couple of months. It's in the shower corner that doesn't get much sun and the musty smell hits you as soon as you open the door, even though I clean regularly. My two-year-old’s room is right next to this bathroom and she's had a persistent cough for a few weeks that I can't shake. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a bleach solution?

It is very possible the bathroom mold is contributing to your toddler's cough. The persistent musty smell confirms active microbial growth, and the proximity of her room means she is regularly exposed to airborne spores, which are known respiratory irritants, especially for young children.

In Dubai's high humidity, what you're seeing is likely more than surface mold; it has probably penetrated the porous grout and possibly the wall behind the tiles. A bleach solution will only bleach the visible surface color and does not address the root structure (hyphae) growing deep within the material. It will return.

Given your child's symptoms, this warrants a professional assessment. An inspection can determine the extent of the growth behind the walls and identify the mold species, which is critical for understanding the health risk and proper remediation protocol. For a child's persistent cough, always consult a pediatrician as well to rule out other causes.

Effective remediation involves removing the compromised grout, treating the substrate with professional-grade biocides, and repairing with mold-resistant materials. To prevent recurrence, ensure the bathroom's extractor fan is working properly and runs for at least 30 minutes after showering, and consider a standalone dehumidifier for that area to maintain humidity below 60%.
