Is bathroom mold causing our headaches and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It’s worse in the corner that never gets any sun. Since this started, my husband has had a constant stuffy nose and I’ve been getting headaches. Is this mold and could it be making us sick, or are we just imagining it?

Black mold growth in bathrooms is a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers, compounded by year-round AC use that creates temperature differentials. The symptoms you and your husband are experiencing—headaches and a persistent stuffy nose—are classic reactions to mold exposure for many people. You are not imagining it; these are well-documented irritant effects from inhaling mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by active colonies.

The dark, damp, and sun-deprived corner of your shower is an ideal environment for mold, which feeds on the organic matter in soap scum and dust trapped in grout. For a case that has persisted for two years and is now causing physical symptoms, a DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach may only remove surface discoloration, not the root colony.

The most effective approach is to first identify the mold type to understand its potential health impact, which requires a professional inspection and lab analysis. A proper remediation would then involve removing the affected grout, treating the underlying area with enzymatic cleaners to break down the organic food source, and applying a preventive sealant. To prevent recurrence, improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after showering and regularly wiping down wet surfaces. For health concerns, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) guidelines recommend addressing indoor mold promptly. Given your symptoms, seeking a professional assessment is the most prudent step.
