Is bathroom mold in Dubai dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to panic. I’ve just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower, which they use every night. We’re in an older building in Deira and I know the ventilation isn’t great. Is this kind of bathroom mold in Dubai particularly dangerous for children, and what’s the fastest way to get rid of it properly?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's climate can certainly be a trigger for respiratory irritation in children. The high humidity and poor ventilation common in older Deira buildings create an ideal environment for mold growth. The black speckles in your grout are likely a surface mold, which often causes increased coughing, congestion, and can worsen allergy or asthma symptoms, especially in kids with developing respiratory systems.
The fastest initial step is to clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated, non-bleach mold remover. Scrub the grout thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. However, this only addresses the visible growth. The underlying cause is excess moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee to remove standing water. A small dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient humidity in the room. Because your children are already showing symptoms and the building has known ventilation issues, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Surface cleaning may not be sufficient if moisture has penetrated behind the tiles. An inspector can use a moisture meter to check for hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the actual risk level. For persistent problems in a family home, this diagnostic approach is the most reliable way to ensure a healthy environment. |
