Is bathroom mold urgent in humid Bur Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s grout has been getting these black spots for a couple of months, but after the recent humidity, they've spread to the ceiling corner above the shower. I live in an older building in Bur Dubai and the bathroom window is tiny, so it never really dries out properly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Yes, it is urgent to address, primarily because of your building's age and poor ventilation. In Bur Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant condensation from showers, that mold will not self-resolve and is actively spreading from grout to porous ceiling materials.

For now, you can manage surface mold on non-porous tiles and grout with a white vinegar spray (let it sit for an hour before scrubbing) or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner. However, this is a temporary measure. The mold in the ceiling corner is the main concern. If it has spread to the plasterboard or paint, the hyphae (root structures) are likely growing deep into the material, which no surface cleaning can reach. This points to a moisture issue within the wall or ceiling cavity itself, common in older buildings where insulation and vapour barriers may be compromised.

Professional assessment is recommended to determine the extent. They will check for hidden moisture and identify the species, as some molds common in damp UAE bathrooms, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, can cause significant irritation and allergic reactions, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Remediation in such cases involves controlled removal of affected porous materials and addressing the underlying humidity source. For a lasting solution, installing a properly sized extractor fan that runs during and after showers is non-negotiable in a windowless bathroom.
