Is bathroom mold urgent or can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. It’s been so humid lately that the mirror never fully clears. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

Black spots in grout with a persistent musty smell indicate active mold growth, which is common in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and constant condensation from year-round AC use. The urgency depends on the extent.

For a small, surface-level area confined to grout lines, a thorough DIY cleaning can be attempted. Use a dedicated mold-killing cleaner or a mix of one part bleach to four parts water. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush, ensure the area is well-ventilated, and allow it to dry completely. However, bleach only removes surface discoloration; it does not kill the mold roots embedded deep within porous grout, so regrowth is likely.

Professional assessment is recommended if the spots are widespread, if the mold has a fuzzy texture, or if the musty smell persists after cleaning. These signs suggest deeper infiltration behind the tiles or into the wallboard, which DIY methods cannot address. In the UAE's climate, hidden moisture can lead to structural damage and significantly impact indoor air quality. A professional inspection, often involving moisture meters, can identify the source of the moisture (like a leaking pipe or insufficient sealing) and the mold species to determine the appropriate remediation protocol.
