Is bathroom mold urgent or can i handle it myself?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the wall tiles. It’s worse in the corner behind the toilet where it’s always a bit damp. With the humidity lately, it seems to be spreading. How urgent is it to get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself over the weekend?

Visible mold growth with a persistent musty smell indicates an active colony that's already releasing spores into your bathroom's air. Given Dubai's high humidity levels, especially during summer, this situation will continue to worsen without addressing the underlying moisture source.

For a small, surface-level patch covering less than one square foot, you can attempt to manage it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the grout with a dedicated grout brush and a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (never mix chemicals). The critical step is to identify and eliminate the moisture source. In your case, the damp corner behind the toilet suggests either poor ventilation, a tiny leak, or condensation buildup. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure the AC is functioning properly to control indoor humidity.

However, if the mold has spread across a larger area, has penetrated the grout (making it soft or crumbly), or if the musty smell persists after a thorough cleaning, it's time for a professional assessment. The mold may have spread behind the tiles or into the wall cavity. In such cases, surface cleaning is ineffective and a proper inspection, often involving moisture meters, is needed to find the full extent of the problem and recommend a lasting solution.
