Is bathtub mold making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and sneezing non-stop for the last couple of weeks, and I'm starting to panic. I've just pulled back the silicone sealant around our Jumeirah Village Circle bathtub and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it that I never knew was there. The bathroom doesn't even have a window, so the humidity just sits there after every shower. Could this mold be the reason they're so sick, and is it something I need to get the landlord to fix urgently?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth discovered under the bathtub sealant is a significant contributor to your children's persistent respiratory symptoms. The black, fuzzy growth is characteristic of Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, both of which are known to produce mycotoxins and allergens that can cause chronic coughing, sneezing, and other allergic reactions, particularly in children whose immune systems are more vulnerable.

The conditions in your bathroom are a textbook example of a mold amplification site. The lack of ventilation and constant high humidity, exacerbated by Dubai's intense climate and year-round AC use which creates massive condensation, provides the perfect environment for hidden mold to thrive behind tiles and under sealants.

This is not a simple surface cleaning issue. Disturbing the mold by pulling back the sealant has likely released a large concentration of spores into the air, which are now circulating throughout your home via the air conditioning system. DIY attempts often worsen the situation by increasing cross-contamination.

Under UAE tenancy law (Law No. 26 of 2007), the landlord is obligated to maintain the property in a habitable condition. A significant mold infestation stemming from a structural lack of ventilation constitutes a urgent repair issue that you must formally notify them of.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you cease any further DIY investigation and contact a professional immediately. Our certified team at Saniservice specializes in forensic-level mold inspections, including air quality testing to identify spore types and concentrations. We provide a comprehensive report that can be presented to your landlord to mandate swift, proper remediation.
