Is bedroom AC mold an emergency or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little bit onto the carpet for maybe a week now. I kept meaning to call maintenance but got busy, and now I’ve pulled back the corner of the carpet and there’s a patch of black and green mold on the concrete underneath. Given how humid it is here, is this something I need to get fixed as an emergency today, or can it wait until the weekend?

That damp patch under your carpet is a priority to address, but whether it's a true emergency depends on the size and your household's health.

A small, contained patch can likely be managed until the weekend if you act immediately to stop the moisture source. Shut off that AC unit at the circuit breaker to prevent further leakage. Move any furniture away and pull the carpet back fully to expose the area to air, which helps slow mold growth in our high humidity. However, if the patch is larger than roughly one square meter, you notice a strong musty odor in the room, or if anyone living there has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, you should treat this as more urgent and seek professional assessment sooner.

The concrete slab underneath acts like a sponge, and mold can wick into it, making a simple surface clean ineffective. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC use creates ideal condensation conditions for mold to thrive if a leak persists. Merely wiping the visible growth won't address the moisture trapped within the concrete, which will cause it to return.

For a proper fix, the leak must be repaired by an AC technician first. Then, the affected carpet and underpad likely need removal. The concrete should be professionally cleaned and dried with industrial equipment to draw out the embedded moisture. A company with microbiology expertise can take a surface sample to identify the type of mold, which dictates the specific remediation protocol required. This is the only way to ensure it is resolved completely and does not become a recurring issue.
