Is bedroom black mold dangerous? Need professional help?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom AC unit has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the wall behind the wardrobe. My wife’s allergies have been acting up badly and I’m worried it’s connected. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially given your wife's allergy flare-up and the AC leak, should be addressed with caution. The combination of a persistent moisture source and visible growth means this is likely more than a surface issue. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold to penetrate porous materials like drywall and concrete.

For a patch that size, DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous surfaces and does not address the roots (hyphae) growing within the wall. It can also aggravate respiratory issues during application. The AC leak must be fixed first to eliminate the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

Given the health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the extent of the contamination hidden within the wall cavity and behind the wardrobe, which is almost certainly larger than the visible patch. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing affected materials safely to prevent spore dispersal, and using specialized antimicrobials. For verification, post-remediation testing by an independent microbiology lab is the only way to confirm the space has been returned to a healthy baseline.

This is a case where professional handling is necessary to ensure the mold is properly removed and the underlying moisture issue is resolved.
