Is bedroom mold a DIY fix or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It's been crazy humid lately in our Jumeirah apartment and I'm worried it's mold. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional for a proper inspection?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, given Jumeirah's high humidity and the lack of air circulation behind furniture. This is a common issue in Dubai apartments where year-round AC use can create cold surfaces that condense moisture.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes the color and does not kill the roots on porous surfaces like drywall. Scrub gently, ensure the area is completely dry, and improve ventilation.

However, the location behind the wardrobe is a concern. This suggests a persistent moisture issue, possibly from condensation or a hidden leak. If the mold has penetrated the wall or drywall, or if it returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water source, which is the only way to prevent recurrence. A lab test can also identify the mold species, which is important for assessing any potential health risks, especially in a bedroom. In many cases here, what’s visible is just the tip of the iceberg.
