Is bedroom mold causing husband's cough and itchy eyes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the bottom of our bedroom wall, behind the wardrobe. It's been extra humid lately in our Jumeirah villa, and my husband has had a persistent cough and itchy eyes for the past month that won't go away. Could this mold be the cause of his symptoms, and what's the first step we should take to deal with it safely?

It is very likely the mold is causing or exacerbating your husband's symptoms. The black speckles behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of a condensation issue, and the symptoms—persistent cough and itchy eyes—are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly from the types that thrive in Dubai's humid climate and air-conditioned homes.

The first step is to safely assess the extent. Do not attempt to scrub it, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. For a small, visible patch (under ~1 sqm), you can carefully clean it with a vinegar solution while wearing an N95 mask and gloves, ensuring the room is well-ventilated. However, since it's behind furniture and has likely been growing, the wall cavity or back of the wardrobe may harbor a larger colony you cannot see.

Given the symptoms and location, a professional inspection is the most prudent course of action. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and identify the moisture source, which is critical—often it's a small plumbing leak or sustained condensation from the AC unit. In Dubai villas, high outdoor humidity seeping through walls and meeting cold AC surfaces creates a perfect environment for mold.

A proper remediation plan addresses both the removal and the moisture source to prevent recurrence. For health-related cases, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is recommended to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to normal indoor levels. This provides peace of mind that the environment is no longer contributing to the symptoms.
