Is bedroom mold causing my kids' allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having persistent runny noses and coughs for the last month, and I just discovered a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped in there. Could this be the cause of their allergies, and what's the safest way to clean it without making the spores spread everywhere?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to their symptoms. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in older Deira buildings, closets on exterior walls are prime spots for condensation and mold growth. The persistent runny noses and coughs you describe are common reactions to mold spore inhalation.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself carefully. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid brushing it dry, as that aerosolizes spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) to suppress the spores, then wipe it away with a damp cloth. Dispose of the cloth immediately in a sealed bag. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after, but close the closet door and any vents to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms.

However, visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. The underlying cause is excess moisture, likely from humidity condensing on the cooler wall. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing this will result in it returning. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source—whether it's a lack of insulation, an AC condensate issue, or general high humidity—and recommend a permanent fix.

For health concerns and recurring issues, a lab test can identify the mold species, which helps assess the potential risk level and confirms the cleanup was successful. Given the children's persistent symptoms and the building's age, an assessment is a prudent step to ensure the environment is healthy.
