Is bedroom mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots that appeared on the ceiling of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. We had a small leak from the upstairs bathroom a couple of months ago that we thought was fixed, but now this mold has spread to about a meter wide. How urgent is this to get professionally treated, and should I keep them out of the room entirely until it's fixed?

Based on your description, the situation in your Jumeirah villa is highly concerning and requires immediate professional attention. The persistent cough in your children is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores, particularly from a water-damaged area like the one you've described. The black spots, now a meter wide, indicate a significant and active colony, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), which produces mycotoxins that can irritate the respiratory system.

The initial leak from the bathroom was not fully resolved; it merely created a hidden moisture source within the ceiling cavity. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant use of air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for condensation and rapid mold proliferation behind walls and above ceilings. This is not a surface issue you can clean yourself. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your home, drastically increasing exposure.

You must keep your children out of that bedroom and adjacent areas entirely until a certified remediation company has completed the work. Do not attempt to clean it yourself.

This is an urgent health and safety issue. The remediation process requires professional assessment with moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the water damage, followed by engineering controls like negative air pressure chambers to prevent cross-contamination during removal.

For a problem of this scale in a villa, you need a certified expert. I strongly recommend you contact Saniservice for an immediate inspection. They are equipped to handle this according to Dubai Municipality standards. Call them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a diagnostic survey.
