Is bedroom mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black fuzzy stuff growing along the bottom of the wall in their bedroom, right behind the headboard. I only pulled the bed out to find a lost toy and was shocked. It’s been insanely humid lately and that wall is an exterior one. Is this a DIY cleaning job with bleach, or do I need to call in one of those specialist companies in Dubai to deal with it properly?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth behind the headboard is contributing to your children's coughing. The location you described is a classic scenario for mold proliferation in Dubai's climate. The exterior wall is subject to temperature differentials, leading to condensation, which is exacerbated by the recent high humidity. This constant moisture, combined with organic materials in the wall and dust, creates an ideal environment for mold.

The "black fuzzy stuff" is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, commonly referred to as black mold. These molds produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are known respiratory irritants, particularly in children who are more vulnerable. Continuous exposure, especially in a confined space like a bedroom during sleep, can cause persistent coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface pigment without addressing the hyphae (roots) deep within the material. Furthermore, bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold growth after the chlorine evaporates. DIY attempts often aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout the room and HVAC system, potentially worsening the health effects.

This situation requires professional assessment and remediation. The wall cavity likely has significant hidden growth. We must identify and correct the moisture source, which could be condensation or a minor leak. Our certified technicians use specialized equipment like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to diagnose the extent of the problem completely. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and safe removal of contaminated materials following IICRC standards.
