Is bedroom mold causing my kids' cough urgent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been growing along the bottom of our bedroom wall in our villa in Al Barsha. It started as a small patch after the heavy rain last month but has spread into a large black area. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, and is it safe for us to stay in the room tonight?

Yes, it is likely urgent and the mold is a probable cause of the coughing. The combination of a large, spreading black patch and the onset of respiratory symptoms in children warrants immediate attention.

The urgency stems from the mold's active growth, indicated by its spread since the rains. In Dubai's climate, interior wall mold often signals a persistent moisture issue, like water intrusion from the heavy rains or chronic condensation from AC units. This type of damp environment allows mold colonies to thrive and release spores into the air your children are breathing, directly irritating their airways and causing those coughs.

For tonight, it is not safe for them to sleep in that room. The concentrated airborne spore levels near the growth will exacerbate their symptoms. Move them to a well-ventilated room elsewhere in the villa and keep the bedroom door closed to contain the spread. Do not attempt to clean or disturb the mold yourself, as this will aerosolize a massive amount of spores.

You need a professional inspection to identify the exact moisture source—whether it’s a leak, rising damp, or condensation—and to assess the extent of the growth, which may be inside the wall cavity. They will perform air and surface sampling, with lab analysis being critical to identify the mold species and confirm the health risk. Remediation is not just about cleaning the visible patch; it involves fixing the water problem, containing the area, and properly removing contaminated materials to prevent recurrence. In many cases, this level of thoroughness is required to resolve the issue for good and protect your family's health.
