Is bedroom mold causing my kids' health issues?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a constant runny nose and a weird cough for the past month, and I've just discovered black spots growing along the seal of our master bedroom window in our Jumeirah Park villa, which I think is mold. It got worse after the heavy dew we had last week and the room always feels damp. Should I be really worried about their health and is this something I need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can I handle it myself?

It is highly probable that the mold is contributing to your children's persistent respiratory symptoms. The constant runny nose and cough are classic reactions to mold exposure, particularly in children who are more sensitive. The black spots on your window seal are a visible sign of a moisture problem, and the damp feeling confirms that conditions are ideal for mold growth, which has likely been exacerbated by the recent high humidity and condensation.

Given the climate in Dubai, especially in villas in areas like Jumeirah Park, this is a common issue. Year-round air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials between the indoor and outdoor environments, leading to condensation on cooler surfaces like windows and walls. This persistent dampness, combined with organic material in dust, provides everything mold needs to thrive.

For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg. The mold can proliferate inside the wall cavity behind the seal, which you cannot see or effectively treat yourself.

Because the health of your children is involved and the problem is inside your home, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the hidden damage and identify the precise source of the moisture intrusion. A lab analysis of a tape-lift sample can also identify the species of mold, which helps in understanding the potential health risks and confirming the cleanup was successful. Addressing the root cause, such as sealing the window or improving ventilation, is the only way to prevent it from returning.
