Is bedroom mold causing our allergies and how to remove it?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has had this dark, fuzzy black patch for a couple of months, and lately both my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and itchy eyes. I tried wiping it down with vinegar but it just came back worse after the recent humidity. Could this mold be causing our allergy-like symptoms, and what's the proper way to get rid of it for good in this climate?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black fungal growth behind your wardrobe is a contributing factor to your allergic symptoms, specifically the stuffy noses and itchy eyes. The dark, fuzzy appearance is characteristic of active mold colonization, likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and condensation issues, particularly in air-conditioned environments where cold surfaces meet warm, moist air.

The application of vinegar is not a recommended remediation strategy. It is a mild acid that may kill surface spores but does not address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) embedded within the porous wall material. Furthermore, the moisture from the application can actually provide the residual moisture needed for the remaining spores to proliferate, which explains the recurrence and worsening you observed.

For a permanent solution, a professional approach is required. The wardrobe must be moved to fully expose the affected wall. The extent of the contamination within the drywall/plaster must be assessed; often, the mold penetrates deeper than the visible surface, necessitating controlled removal and replacement of the building material. The root cause of the moisture—typically interstitial condensation due to the temperature differential between the room and the AC-chilled wall, or a potential hidden leak—must be diagnosed and rectified. Any remediation must be conducted under containment to prevent cross-contamination of your bedroom with spores.

Given the health symptoms and the likelihood of a significant infestation, we strongly advise against a DIY attempt. Professional inspection and remediation, in compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines, are necessary to ensure the problem is resolved safely and permanently. Our team at Saniservice uses advanced moisture detection tools, HEPA-filtered containment, and EPA-approved antimicrobial treatments designed for the UAE climate.
