Is bedroom mold causing our constant coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it, right where the outer wall is. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for two years and never had an issue until after the heavy rains in March. Could this mold be the reason for our constant headaches and sore throats, and how dangerous is it actually?

Black mould exposure can certainly cause persistent coughing, headaches, and sore throats, especially in children. The symptoms you describe are a common reaction to inhaling mould spores. The location behind the wardrobe against an outer wall is a classic spot for mould growth in Dubai villas, as it's often a cold surface where humidity from the air condenses, creating a damp environment mould needs to thrive.
The heavy rains in March likely increased the moisture content in your villa's walls. If the external waterproofing isn't perfect, this moisture can become trapped inside, particularly in older constructions. The problem is then sustained by our high ambient humidity, which is often worsened by keeping the AC at a very cold temperature, creating a significant temperature differential that promotes condensation on cooler surfaces. For your family's health, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the mould species—while often called "black mould," many species can appear black, and their health impacts vary. More importantly, they will use moisture meters to find the exact source of the dampness. Simply cleaning the visible patch is not enough; the root cause must be addressed to prevent it from returning immediately. Until it's assessed, keep the bedroom well-ventilated and avoid disturbing the mould, as this can release more spores. Do not attempt to bleach it, as this can worsen the problem by adding more moisture to the wall. A reputable local inspector will provide a detailed assessment and a protocol that addresses both the removal and the underlying moisture issue, which is a standard requirement under Dubai Municipality's guidelines for habitable dwellings. |
