Is bedroom mold causing our headaches and congestion?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been there a while but seems worse since the weather got more humid. Lately, my husband and I have been waking up with headaches and a stuffy nose that clears up when we go to work. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms?

It very likely is. Headaches and congestion that improve when you leave the home are classic signs of mold exposure. The recent increase in Dubai's humidity provides the perfect environment for mold to flourish, especially in poorly ventilated areas like closets on exterior walls where condensation can form.
You should arrange a professional inspection. The black, fuzzy appearance suggests a significant colony, and proper identification is crucial. A certified inspector will use moisture meters to find the water source (often a small leak or condensation from the AC system) and may recommend air or surface sampling to determine the species, as some types are more strongly linked to these symptoms than others. Until the inspection, avoid disturbing the area, as this can release spores. Keep the closet door open to improve airflow and consider using a dehumidifier in the room. Simply wiping it away is not a solution—the underlying moisture problem must be fixed to prevent regrowth. In many cases, remediation involves removing affected drywall or materials to ensure the colony is fully addressed. |
