Is bedroom mold from AC leak dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the past couple of months, and now I’ve found patches of black and green mold on the wall behind my headboard. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a dry cough that goes away a few hours after I leave the apartment. Is this type of mold in a bedroom dangerous, and should I get my landlord to fix the AC unit first or call a professional cleaner immediately?

Yes, bedroom mold from an AC leak can be dangerous, particularly given your symptoms. The consistent moisture from the leak creates an ideal environment for mold growth. The black and green patches you see are colonies releasing spores and mycotoxins into the air you breathe while sleeping. Your stuffy nose and dry cough that resolves when you leave are strong indicators of a mold-related reaction.

In Dubai's climate, where we rely on AC year-round, any internal leak drastically increases humidity, accelerating mold growth within walls and the AC unit itself. This isn't surface dust; it's an active infestation fueled by a water source.

You must address both issues simultaneously. Inform your landlord immediately about the AC leak, as per Dubai rental regulations, they are responsible for maintaining the AC unit and fixing the source of moisture. However, do not wait for the repair to address the mold.

A professional inspection is crucial. The visible mold is likely just a fraction of the growth, which has probably spread inside the wall cavity and the AC system. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. A certified inspector can assess the full extent, identify the species (some black molds are more problematic than others), and create a remediation plan.

For your health, relocate from that bedroom until the leak is fixed and the mold is professionally remediated. Simply cleaning the visible patch will not solve the problem if the moisture source remains and the hidden growth is not addressed.
