Is bedroom mold in Jumeirah villa an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the heavy humidity started a couple of weeks ago. I finally moved their wooden wardrobe today and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold on the wall behind it, about the size of a dinner plate. Given how quickly this seems to have developed, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

The damp smell and visible mold growth behind the wardrobe is a direct result of Dubai's high humidity, which creates condensation on cooler exterior walls, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow. For a patch the size of a dinner plate, a professional assessment is strongly recommended before you attempt any cleaning.

While small surface mold can sometimes be managed with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, the concern is what you cannot see. The wall itself may have absorbed moisture, and the mold could be growing within the drywall or insulation. Disturbing it without proper containment can release a large number of spores into the bedroom air, potentially affecting your children's health. A professional inspection will identify the moisture source, the extent of the growth, and the mold type—some species common in the region are more problematic than others.

In villas, this often points to a deeper issue like a small plumbing leak in the wall or insufficient exterior waterproofing that is letting moisture in. DIY cleaning will only address the surface symptom, and the mold will almost certainly return. For a confirmed case of this size, remediation should include containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of affected porous materials like drywall, followed by addressing the root cause of the moisture. You can request that the company provide before-and-after air quality test results from an accredited lab to verify the space has been returned to a healthy condition.
