Is black AC mold causing my Dubai villa symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been blowing out a damp, earthy smell for the past month, and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat that just won't go away. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in a black, powdery dust. Could this be mold causing my symptoms, and who should I call to properly clean the AC unit in Dubai?

Yes, the black powdery dust on your AC filter is very likely mold, and it is almost certainly causing your persistent stuffy nose and sore throat. This is a common issue in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and year-round AC use, which creates constant condensation inside the units—an ideal environment for mold growth.

You should immediately stop using that AC unit. For a proper cleaning, do not call a general handyman. You need a specialized indoor environmental professional or a reputable AC cleaning company that uses antimicrobial treatments and, crucially, provides before-and-after testing to verify the mold has been removed. Many standard services just wash the evaporator coils but leave the contaminated ductwork untouched, which is why the smell and symptoms return so quickly.

The initial step should be a professional inspection to assess the full extent of the contamination inside the ductwork and unit. In serious cases like this, remediation is needed, not just a basic clean. Look for providers who hold certifications like IICRC and can produce documented evidence from a microbiology lab showing the species identified and the reduction in spore counts post-cleaning. This is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved for good and your indoor air quality is restored.
