Is black AC mold causing our sickness, need specialist?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been making my throat feel scratchy and my son has been sneezing non-stop. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the entire plastic housing around it is covered in black, fuzzy spots. We’ve had the unit on constantly for months because of the heat. Could this mold be causing our symptoms and is a regular AC servicing company enough to handle this, or do I need to call a specialist?

The black mold in your AC is likely causing those symptoms. The fuzzy growth suggests active colonization, and the constant AC use circulates spores directly into your breathing air, leading to the irritation and allergic reactions you're describing.

A regular AC servicing company is not equipped for this. Their cleaning focuses on mechanical parts and efficiency, not biological contamination. They typically lack the tools for proper containment to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning, and they won't verify the results with post-remediation testing.

For a case this visible, a specialist in mold remediation is necessary. The process should involve isolating the unit, using HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments on the entire air pathway—not just the visible spots on the housing—and most critically, a post-cleaning verification test to confirm the air is safe. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and condensation create a perfect environment for mold, a half-measure will lead to rapid regrowth. Look for a provider with IICRC certification and their own microbiology lab to handle the testing, as this provides the concrete evidence needed to confirm the issue is resolved.
