Is black and green shower mold a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black and green spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It's especially bad in the corner that never gets any sun. I’ve tried wiping it with bleach spray, but it just comes back after a few days. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner for this?

Based on your description of recurring black and green mold in the shower grout, this is a common yet persistent issue in Dubai homes, primarily driven by our extreme humidity, constant air conditioning creating temperature differentials, and condensation. While small, superficial spots can sometimes be managed, your case—where bleach has failed and the mold is spreading—indicates a deeper, systemic problem.

The discoloration you see is the surface-level fruiting body of the mold. The underlying hyphae (root system) have likely penetrated deep into the porous grout and possibly behind the tiles. DIY solutions like bleach only bleach the visible color and do not kill the root structure; the high moisture environment then allows it to rapidly regenerate. Stronger, off-the-shelf fungicides are often ineffective against entrenched colonies and can be hazardous to use in a poorly ventilated bathroom without proper PPE.

For a lasting solution, the infestation must be professionally assessed. We would first conduct a moisture survey to identify any hidden dampness and perform ATP or mold air testing to determine the spore concentration and species. Remediation involves specialized antimicrobial agents applied with ULV foggers to eradicate the root system, not just surface cleaning. For severe cases, grout removal and re-sealing with moisture-resistant compounds may be necessary.

Given the rapid regrowth you're experiencing, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice is equipped with the tools and expertise to diagnose the full extent of the issue and provide a permanent solution.
