Is black bathroom grout a serious health risk?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black over the last few weeks, and no matter how much I scrub, it keeps coming back. It’s been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. Given how quickly this is spreading, is this a serious health risk that I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or is it something I can treat myself over the weekend?

Black grout in a bathroom is almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. While not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, its presence indicates a persistent moisture problem that can affect indoor air quality.

For most healthy adults, this typically causes irritation—worsening allergies, sinus congestion, or respiratory irritation. The risk is higher for infants, the elderly, or those with asthma or compromised immune systems. The speed of its return after scrubbing means you're only addressing the visible symptom, not the moisture source fueling its growth.

Given the climate, DIY solutions are often temporary. Bleach only removes surface colour and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Effective DIY requires addressing the root cause: run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and use a squeegee on walls to remove standing water. A dehumidifier can help the room dry faster. For cleaning, a paste of baking soda and vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner is more effective than bleach, but it will likely return.

A professional assessment is recommended because the mold you see might be a surface issue, but it can also be a sign of a deeper problem within the wall if there's a hidden leak or insufficient waterproofing. They can conduct moisture mapping to find the true source and perform air or surface sampling to identify the species, which determines the necessary remediation scope. For widespread or rapidly recurring growth, professional remediation is the most reliable solution to ensure it is properly contained and removed.
