Is black bathroom grout mold behind my walls in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom at our villa in Jumeirah Park is turning black, and it's spreading up the wall. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just came back worse after a couple of days. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's behind the walls. Is this a job for a professional cleaning company, or can I handle it myself, and what's the typical cost for a proper mold remediation here?

Black grout in a Dubai bathroom is almost certainly active mould, and its rapid return after bleaching strongly suggests a deeper moisture issue. The high ambient humidity, combined with condensation from showers and potentially unseen leaks from pipes or AC drain pans, creates a perfect environment for mould to thrive behind tiles.

Bleach only removes surface discolouration but does not address the root cause—the moisture feeding the mould colony within the porous grout and potentially the wall cavity. In villas, this is a common pathway for mould to spread to other rooms.

For a recurring problem of this nature, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source of dampness without destructive testing. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like affected grout and drywall, and applying antimicrobial treatments. The final, critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source, which could be inadequate ventilation, a leaking pipe, or poor waterproofing.

Costs for proper remediation vary significantly based on the extent of the damage behind the walls. You can expect a wider range for a full remediation project that includes moisture diagnosis, demolition, and reconstruction, compared to a simple surface cleaning service. Always request a detailed assessment and quotation that breaks down the diagnostic, containment, remediation, and repair stages.
