Is black bathroom mold causing my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black, especially in the corner by the shower. It’s gotten worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. My youngest has developed a bit of a persistent cough that seems better when we're out of the house, and I'm really worried the mold might be the cause.
What's the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this for good, and should I be calling a professional cleaning company or is there a DIY solution that actually works here?

Black mould in bathroom grout is a common issue in Dubai, exacerbated by high humidity and condensation from showers and year-round AC use. The type typically found in bathrooms, Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mould), can indeed cause respiratory irritation, including coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, particularly in children whose systems are more sensitive.
While a direct causal link is difficult to prove without testing, the timing you describe—the cough improving when away from home—strongly suggests the mould is a contributing irritant. For a child's persistent cough, consulting a paediatrician is the first step to rule out other causes. For effective, kid-safe remediation, start with a DIY approach if the area is small (under one square meter). Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. However, this often only removes surface growth. The key to a permanent solution is controlling moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls and tiles. A dehumidifier can help significantly in between uses. If the mould returns quickly or the discolouration is deep within the grout, the moisture source may be behind the tiles, and professional assessment is warranted. For health concerns and recurrent mould, a professional inspection can identify the exact species and extent of the problem. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide concrete data on spore counts inside the bathroom versus other rooms, confirming if levels are elevated enough to cause symptoms. This evidence-based approach is the most reliable way to protect your family's health and ensure the remediation is truly effective. |
