Is black dust from AC a health risk?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and now I’ve just spotted a patch of black dust around the air vent in the master bedroom. It’s been crazy humid the last few weeks. How urgently do I need to get someone to look at this, and is it a health risk for my family?

That black dust around your AC vent is a strong indicator of mold growth within the system, a common issue in Dubai due to the constant high humidity and year-round AC use. The damp smell confirms it. This occurs when condensation inside the ductwork mixes with dust, creating an ideal environment for mold.

For most people, this exposure causes irritation like sneezing, a stuffy nose, or worsened allergy symptoms. The risk is higher for infants, the elderly, or anyone with asthma or compromised immune systems. You should address this promptly.

In the UAE, this is considered a tenant maintenance issue. I recommend having a professional inspection within the next week. They should use a borescope to look inside the ducts and take surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, as this determines the remediation method. Simply wiping the vent won't solve the problem growing inside the unit. A proper cleaning will involve accessing and vacuuming the ductwork and treating the evaporator coil. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC drain line is clear and consider using a dehumidifier alongside your AC during peak humidity.
